Unemployment Rates on a Rise as Economic Claims Jump in the US

Several major companies are announcing job cuts in the coming weeks as the number of Americans first-time claims for jobless benefits unexpectedly jumped last week to a 26-year high.

Reported unemployment rates distributed through the economists project calculates a 7.5 percent increase in January alone. Companies from Macy’s Inc. to PNC Financial Services Group Inc. are feeling the heat as job positions are eliminated by the thousands.

President Barack Obama urges congress to quickly pass the economic stimulus legislation to relieve the pressures of the economic jobless claims. Obama says the US economy is “in a for a tough several months” in an interview with NBC.

Proposal Passed After Salmonella Outbreak

Britney Darnell’s Blog/ February 12, 2009

A proposal in relation to the salmonella outbreak has caused quite some controversy among food makers, state inspectors, and food and drug administration officials in Georgia.

The incident following the Peanut Corporation of America plant in Blakely, Ga. was the root of panel discussion during a recent hearing. The Peanut Corp. faces additional civil lawsuits and ongoing investigation has launched. Knowingly, the Peanut Corp. is in for a hefty suit because of the outbreak that nearly affected nearly 600 people and deaths amongst those numbers.

The spreading of controversial discussion is underway as the Food and Drug Administration officials get heavily involved. With a suit of this nature, Peanut Corp. should have seen it coming. Under the new proposition, corporations that are found withholding or concealing the reports could face felony charges that carry a prison sentence of up to fine years. With Peanut Corp. under heavy investigation they are most likely to get roasted over something this big.

The new plan will also help for future hearings of a big outbreak such as this one. Many states, such as Texas have also had its share of salmonella outbreaks. This being the biggest one of them all has caused plants, such as manufacturers in Texas, to take an even greater look into what is happening at these particular plants.

The Senate Agriculture Committee is wrapping up the plan and has a heavy amount of support behind them. Georgia citizens have no reason to doubt what is next in the development of this case.
